Using an eSIM in Malaysia
Networks and brands
The plans we list in Malaysia name CelcomDigi, Maxis and YTL. CelcomDigi came from the merger of Celcom and Digi, which Axiata and Telenor announced as completed on 30 November 2022, so a plan page that names Celcom and Digi is naming the two legacy brands of one operator. The footer of the Yes site names YTL Communications as the company behind the Yes service.
We rank CelcomDigi and Maxis first using published network information, not our own tests (how we pick). Maxis says on its own site that its 4G network covers 96% of Malaysia's population. That is Maxis's figure, and the page does not say how it is measured.
Rural areas, Borneo and the islands
Maxis says 5G is primarily available in urban and suburban areas and is expanding, and that 4G remains the primary network serving most rural locations today. Check the map of your plan's network before you head to Sabah, Sarawak or an island. We have not found a current state-by-state coverage figure from the regulator, so we do not give one.
Registering a tourist SIM
MCMC's FAQ on its 2026 rules says every user of a Malaysian prepaid service must register, tourists included. A tourist shows their original passport and, if they need one, their visa. Photocopies and scans are not accepted, and when a service centre or dealer registers a non-Malaysian, the passport is checked with a passport reader using facial recognition. Non-Malaysians can register up to two prepaid SIMs with each telco, and a tourist SIM can be used for up to three months from successful registration, after which it is cut off automatically.
MCMC registered these rules on 26 February 2026 (Determination No. 1 of 2026). Neither its media statement nor its FAQ mentions eSIMs, and we have not confirmed whether the rules apply to a travel eSIM bought from an overseas provider. Check the plan page for any ID step before you buy.

Questions about eSIMs for Malaysia
What is the best eSIM for Malaysia from Australia?
It depends on how long you are away and how much data you use. The picks at the top of this page show the cheapest plan, the most data for the money and the best-network option, each with the rule that chose it. The table ranks every Malaysia eSIM plan by cost per GB. To see two providers side by side, try Airalo vs Holafly.
Can I get unlimited data on a Malaysia eSIM?
Providers sell unlimited plans for Malaysia. Filter the table to Unlimited to compare them by price per day. Unlimited plans can come with fair-use rules, such as slowing down after a set amount of data, and the table prints the rule where the provider states one.
Do I need to register a SIM or eSIM in Malaysia?
Malaysia's regulator, MCMC, says everyone who uses a Malaysian prepaid service must register, tourists included. Under its rules in force since 26 February 2026, a tourist registers with their original passport and, if they need one, their visa; non-Malaysians can register up to two prepaid SIMs with each telco; and a tourist SIM can be used for up to three months from successful registration, after which it is cut off (MCMC). Those rules are for SIMs sold by Malaysian telcos. We have not confirmed whether a travel eSIM bought from an overseas provider needs a registration step, so check the plan page before you buy.
Will a Malaysia eSIM work in Sabah and Sarawak?
Malaysia is split between Peninsular Malaysia and Borneo, where Sabah and Sarawak are. We have not found a current coverage figure for each state from the regulator, so check the coverage map of the network your plan names for the places you are going, including islands and rural areas. Maxis, for example, says on its own network page that 5G is primarily available in urban and suburban areas and that 4G remains the primary network in most rural locations (Maxis).
Which network is a Malaysia eSIM on?
The plan page names the network. You may see Celcom and Digi named together, which are the two legacy brands of CelcomDigi after the two companies merged in November 2022 (Axiata). You may also see YTL: the footer of the Yes site names YTL Communications as the company behind the Yes service (Yes). Check the map for the network your plan names.
Can I keep my Australian phone number with an eSIM?
Most phones with eSIM can use two lines at once, so the travel eSIM can handle data while your Australian line stays on for texts. Your Australian line can still start roaming charges, so set it up carefully. Our guide covers the settings: how to keep your Australian number.
Do I turn off data roaming when using an eSIM?
Turn data roaming on for the travel eSIM, because most travel eSIMs are roaming eSIMs, and turn it off for your Australian line so it cannot use data abroad. The steps are in how to set up a travel eSIM.
Will a Malaysia eSIM work if I cross into Singapore?
Every plan in our Malaysia table covers Malaysia only, so check the plan page before you cross the border. If you are spending time in both countries, compare the Singapore eSIM table as well.
What is the disadvantage of an eSIM?
A travel eSIM needs a phone that supports eSIM and is unlocked (how to check). You need an internet connection to download it, so install it at home over Wi-Fi, and many eSIMs cannot be reinstalled once removed. Every plan in our Malaysia table is data only, with no Malaysian phone number for calls.
How we compare Malaysia eSIMs
- We take each plan's price from the provider's site and convert it to Australian dollars on the check date.
- Cost per GB is price divided by data. Unlimited plans are compared by price per day.
- Network is the Malaysian carrier the eSIM connects to. Hotspot and 5G are as the provider states them.
- Each pick follows the rule printed with it, and each is a different plan. Remaining ties go to the lower total price.
- We recheck prices at least every 30 days and show the check date on every plan.
How we make money
eSIM Mate is free to use. No link on the site earns a commission yet. Once a provider approves us, its links will: the provider pays us, never you. That will never change your price or the order of plans, and we list providers whether or not they pay us.
