Cost per GB is price ÷ data; unlimited plans show price per day. Airalo unlimited (3, 5, 7, 10, 15 and 30 days): slows to 1 Mbps after 3 GB a day. Holafly unlimited (3, 5, 7, 10, 15 and 30 days): may slow speeds for up to a day under its fair-use policy; no threshold or speed is stated. Ubigi unlimited (7, 15 and 30 days): slows to 2 Mbps after 5 GB a day.

The table lists plans of 30 days or less. Holafly also sells longer Canada plans.

Using an eSIM in Canada

Check the map for your plan's network

Canada is large, so coverage depends on where you go. Check the coverage map of the network your plan names before you travel. Bell says on its own page that signal strength, speeds and whether a phone uses 5G depend on factors including rate plan, location and topography, and that where 5G is not available phones fall back to 4G LTE. Its 5G+ service is in select areas of several major cities. The Airalo plans we list are 4G LTE only.

We have not found a current regulator figure for rural or northern coverage that we can read and cite, so we do not give one. Operators' own coverage claims are their figures, which is why we treat them as claims and send you to the map.

Other networks

Some plans also name Freedom Mobile, Videotron or SaskTel. Freedom's own page describes its network coverage as Freedom's network plus its Nationwide partner network across Canada, and refers readers to its coverage map for details. Its footnotes also say that outside 5G and 5G+ areas, LTE may be available where there is coverage. If a plan names one of these, read its map for the places you will visit rather than assuming it matches the others.

Crossing into the USA

Some providers sell plans that cover both Canada and the USA. We list plans one destination at a time, so see the USA eSIM table as well if your trip crosses the border, and check that the plan you buy covers both.

FAQ

Questions about eSIMs for Canada

What is the best eSIM for Canada from Australia?

It depends on how long you are away and how much data you use. The picks at the top of this page show the cheapest plan, the most data for the money and the best-network option, each with the rule that chose it. The table ranks every Canada eSIM plan by cost per GB. To see two providers side by side, try Airalo vs Holafly.

Can I get unlimited data on a Canada eSIM?

Providers sell unlimited plans for Canada. Filter the table to Unlimited to compare them by price per day. Unlimited plans can come with fair-use rules, such as slowing down after a set amount of data, and the table prints the rule where the provider states one.

Can I get a Canada eSIM with calls and a phone number?

Every plan in our Canada table is data only, with no Canadian phone number for calls. Your Australian line can stay on for texts if you set up roaming carefully (how to keep your Australian number).

Is there an eSIM that covers both Canada and the USA?

Some providers sell regional plans that cover Canada and the USA together. We do not list them, because each page on this site compares plans for one destination. None of the plans in our Canada table covers the USA, so if you are crossing the border, compare the USA eSIM table as well.

Which network is a Canada eSIM on?

The plan page names the network. Every plan we list names Bell. Holafly's and Ubigi's plans also name Telus, and Ubigi's also name Freedom Mobile, Videotron and SaskTel. Bell's own page says its network covers 99% of the Canadian population; that is Bell's figure, and we have not checked it (Bell). See how we pick for how we rank networks.

Will a Canada eSIM work in rural and remote areas?

Not everywhere, and a coverage map is the best check. Bell says signal strength, speeds and whether a device uses 5G depend on factors including location and topography, and it points customers to its map to check a specific address (Bell). Look up the map of the network your plan names for the places you are going, such as national parks and highways between towns, before you rely on it.

Can I keep my Australian phone number with an eSIM?

Most phones with eSIM can use two lines at once, so the travel eSIM can handle data while your Australian line stays on for texts. Your Australian line can still start roaming charges, so set it up carefully. Our guide covers the settings: how to keep your Australian number.

Do I turn off data roaming when using an eSIM?

Turn data roaming on for the travel eSIM, because most travel eSIMs are roaming eSIMs, and turn it off for your Australian line so it cannot use data abroad. The steps are in how to set up a travel eSIM.

What is the disadvantage of an eSIM?

A travel eSIM needs a phone that supports eSIM and is unlocked (how to check). You need an internet connection to download it, so install it at home over Wi-Fi, and many eSIMs cannot be reinstalled once removed. Every plan in our Canada table is data only, so there is no Canadian number for calls.

How we compare Canada eSIMs

  1. We take each plan's price from the provider's site and convert it to Australian dollars on the check date.
  2. Cost per GB is price divided by data. Unlimited plans are compared by price per day.
  3. Network is the Canadian carrier the eSIM connects to. Hotspot and 5G are as the provider states them.
  4. Each pick follows the rule printed with it, and each is a different plan. Remaining ties go to the lower total price.
  5. We recheck prices at least every 30 days and show the check date on every plan.

How we make money

eSIM Mate is free to use. No link on the site earns a commission yet. Once a provider approves us, its links will: the provider pays us, never you. That will never change your price or the order of plans, and we list providers whether or not they pay us.
