How we compare travel eSIMs

The same rules apply to every destination and every provider, whether or not the provider pays us.

Prices

What we record for each plan

  1. We take each plan's price from the provider's site and convert it to Australian dollars on the check date. We keep the original currency, amount and rate beside it.
  2. Cost per GB is price divided by data. Unlimited plans have no data figure, so they are compared by price per day, and any fair-use slowdown is printed under the table.
  3. Network is the local carrier the eSIM connects to. On a regional plan it varies by country, so we show how many countries the plan covers. Hotspot and 5G are as the provider states them.
  4. Every plan shows the date we last checked it. We recheck at least every 30 days, and our tools flag any plan older than that.
Best for

How the picks are chosen

  • Cheapest: the lowest price with at least 3 GB and 7 days. Unlimited plans count.
  • Most data: the lowest cost per GB among plans with at least 20 GB; ties go to more data, then more days.
  • Unlimited: the lowest price per day, comparing each provider at the same length: its 10-day plan, or its nearest from 7 days. The pick shows the length used.
  • Best network: plans with at least 5 GB and 7 days, ranked by the published quality of their network in that destination, then 5G, then hotspot, then the lowest cost per GB. Until we have speed tests, this is based on published network information, not our own tests. A region such as Europe has no Best network pick: its plans use a different network in each country.

Each pick is a different plan. If one plan would win two, it keeps the first in this order (Cheapest, Unlimited, Most data, Best network) and the other pick goes to the runner-up. Remaining ties go to the lower total price. The rule is printed with every pick so you can check it against the table.

Limits

What we don't do

  • We don't rate providers with stars or scores. Provider pages show facts from our plan table and dated review notes.
  • We don't claim speeds we haven't measured. Speed results appear only after a real test on the trip named in the by-line.
  • Prices change. Check the provider's page before you buy; the price there is the one you pay.

How we make money

eSIM Mate is free to use. No link on the site earns a commission yet. Once a provider approves us, its links will: the provider pays us, never you. That will never change your price or the order of plans, and we list providers whether or not they pay us.
